Another Champion from the West
September 26th 2010 07:30
Western Australia is the boom state of Australia. Riding on a vein of rich natural resources, its prosperity is the envy of much of the rest of Australia.
There has also been a small but consistent flow of other riches crossing the country from west to east and making all take note: Western Australia’s rich vein of thoroughbred sprinters.

Many years ago the magnificent Placid Ark cut an unexpected swathe of sprinting success across the nation, resulting in him being awarded the title of Australian co-Champion Racehorse of the Year in 1986-87 - the other co-Champion being Bonecrusher.
The new millennium has seen the energy and transformation of the western state mirrored by the influx of Champion Racehorses from Western Australia.
Miss Andretti held five track records simultaneously in Australia and England and was honoured as 2007 Australian Racehorse of the Year.
Scenic Blast followed Miss Andretti’s path to success in the eastern states, and England, and was awarded Australian Racehorse of the Year 2008-2009, and Australian Champion Sprinter 2008-2009.
Although I am specifically looking at sprinters, it would be remiss of me to not include one of my all-time favourite racehorses in Northerly who was also Australian Racehorse of the Year in 2002-2003. His speedfigures were astronomical and he was one of Australia’s greatest racehorses.
But back to sprinters from Western Australia.
The brilliant Hay List emerges as another horse from the west likely to capture the title of Champion Sprinter.
Hay List easily won his first test at Group One level with a comfortable 2 1/2 length win in the Manikato Stakes over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley last Friday night. His already impressive speedfigures made even more spectacular in this victory.
Not only did Hay List have best speed performance for his race, but also Hollowlea (Group 2 Stutt Stakes) @ $12.10 had best speed performances across all selection criteria, as did Precedence (Group 3 JRA Cup) @ $4.30.
