Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Dreams Come True

March 7th 2009 08:15
Early this year (January the 1st) I completed the third of three articles on horses to watch in 2009.

Heart Of Dreams winning in the Spring

The earlier articles were about Group One winners Whobegotyou and All Silent - both horses having exceptional speedfigures. They have a winning past, and the promise of an equally brilliant future.

The third horse I nominated was a lightly raced gelding who had won only a Listed Race from his limited appearances.

As much as 20 / 1 could have been attained in early markets for Heart Of Dreams to win the Cadbury Guineas - the feature race for 3 year olds in the Melbourne Autumn.

After two unlucky lead up runs from unfavourable barriers the punters and press started to warm to this lightly framed son of Show A Heart. His fast-finishing efforts an indication of his ability, while his back in the field settling position one of necessity and design. With a good barrier he could easily settle much closer to the pace. He would start a very well supported $3.80 second favourite on race day after finally drawing an inside gate.

In a scenario similar to that of Damien Oliver winning a Melbourne Cup so soon after the death of his brother, Craig Newitt would ride a masterly race just one week after the death of his father in a car accident. Cruising in fourth place behind the pace Heart Of Dreams always looked in control (while Newitt would offer a backwards glance on turning before making his sharp winning move).

Craig Newitt has ridden perhaps better than at any time during his career in this past week. His losing ride on Light Fantastic in the Group One Futurity Stakes just one week ago was just as good as this ride today. His poise and perceptions seem finely tuned. Perhaps now he senses a purpose to his craft that stretches beyond accumulation of prizemoney.

The three Group One races today were each won by the horse with the best speed performance (speedfigures as created by Speedratings). The Newmarket by (yet another!) Group One winning son of Scenic - Scenic Blast @ $13.00. The Cadbury Guineas by Heart Of Dreams. And the Australian Cup by the much underrated Niconero @ $14.40.

I do hope that regular readers to RacingWrite have remembered Heart Of Dreams and cheered he and Craig Newitt home today.
