Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Henry courted by racing royalty

November 27th 2008 08:49
The brilliant Kingmambo three-year-old Henrythenavigator was one of my favourite racehorses. In a sensational year of international racing that included superstars of the turf, Zarkava and Curlin, the brave (brilliant) and resilient Henrythenavigator was also - and always - a treat to watch.

Now he is (as are the others of that trinity) at stud and beginning a new phase and career. And from the list of early bookings to Henrythenavigator in year 2009 it is obvious that he will be just as popular as a stallion and be given every opportunity for success.

Already confirmed to go to Henrythenavigator next year are the racing royalty of Rags To Riches and Peeping Fawn. Rags To Riches is the daughter of champion broodmare Better Than Honour (recently sold for $US14 million) and was Champion US Filly of 2007 - winning five times at Group One including her historic win over the colts (Curlin included) in the Belmont Stakes.

Peeping Fawn is by Danehill from Maryinsky - a half-sister to Better Than Honour. Peeping Fawn won four Group One events in 2007 including the Irish Oaks.

Other notable mares booked to Henrythenavigator in 2009 include:

Mien: The dam of Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown.

Fashion Star: dam of Group One winner Eddington (Pimlico Special by 5 1/2 lengths).

Black Penny: dam of French classic winner Bluemamba (French 1000 Guineas).

Half Queen: dam of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Halfbridled.

Glatisnant: dam of Footstepsinthesand (Newmarket 2000 Guineas).

Ticker Tape: maiden mare and winner of the American Oaks at Hollywood Park.

Henrythenavigator stands at Ashford Stud for a service fee of $US65,000 in 2009. It is reported that he is likely to shuttle to Coolmore Australia in 2009.
