Eagle Mountain

Viva Pataca and Eagle Mountain head the international ratings for the $HK 20 million Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup (2000m) on Sunday.

Local champion Viva Pataca is Hong Kong’s highest rated horse and favourite for the premier event. Both trainer John Moore, and jockey Darren Beadman, believe that the 6 year old is going better than ever.
“His two wins this season have been very comfortable, without going to the bottom of the tank either time and he's pulled up terrifically well from both those runs. His feet are good, he's working well and at this stage everything has gone to plan.” - Darren Beadman.
The Hong Kong Cup has assembled a quality field - and if the local champion is to be beaten his most likely conqueror could be the highly talented Eagle Mountain. Trainer Mike de Kock is very pleased with Eagle Mountain's progress and work since arriving in Hong Kong.
“He has travelled nicely to Hong Kong and that was a good blowout there. I don't think we have seen the best of Eagle Mountain yet. He is lightly raced and comes here with fresh legs, which is a great advantage. He is peaking now and I am confident of a good run on Sunday. I think this trip will really suit him. He had the speed to set a track record for the mile at Newmarket on his first run back and then was close to a breakneck gallop in the Breeders' Cup Turf and was only found wanting in the last 150m or so. I think he has the ability to be equally as good as Archipenko and maybe even be better.” - Mike de Kock.
Eagle Mountain’s last run was in the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita where he was claimed in the straight by St Leger winner Conduit - who stormed home to win the 1 1/2 mile race in a brilliant 2.23.42. Behind Eagle Mountain were Dancing Forever - and the race favourite Soldier Of Fortune.
Previous to this Eagle Mountain won the Group 3 Nayef Joel Stakes at Newmarket when a narrow winner over the highly respected Luca Cumani horse Bankable. On this occasion again a slashing time was recorded of 1.34.07 for the mile.
Eagle Mountain looks ideally suited to the 2000m trip after displaying dash over the mile - then only being run down late by one of the world’s best stayers over 1 1/2 miles.
Eagle Mountain was previously trained by Aidan O’Brien. He was twice a winner at Group 2 for O’Brien and finished 2nd in the 2007 Epsom Derby to Authorized - before finishing a distant 3rd to his stablemate Soldier Of Fortune in the Irish Derby.
After finishing a head 2nd behind Literato in the 1 1/4 mile Champion Stakes at Newmarket Eagle Mountain would end up being sold to Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Maktoum and end up in Dubai under the care of Mike de Kock. Unfortunately he soon fractured his pelvis in an accident and required three months of immobilisation in his box. Returning from such an injury questions both the physical aspects of the horse - and the mental attributes. And Eagle Mountain returned to win the Joel Stakes at Newmarket - in record time. An emphatic answer to both queries.
The 4 year old son of Rock Of Gibraltar has raced in the best company in Europe as a 3 year old, and started favourite on 8 occasions - including races against Soldier Of Fortune and Authorized. He has raced 3 times at 10 furlongs (2000m) for one win and two seconds. His two runs for Mike de Kock have been performances full of merit and future promise. Eagle Mountain has been found (a fraction) lacking at Group 1 over 2400m - but it would appear through his record, and logic, that 2000m is his best distance.
