December 12th 2009 02:06
Apart from the Hong Kong International Sprint the other feature races on the card at Sha Tin this Sunday are also full of interest and equine stars all vying for Group One honours.

The Hong Kong International Vase (2400m) boasts a terrific field with the added interest of the inclusion of Youmzain - more famous for not winning races than actual victories. His three consecutive seconds in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe behind champions: Sea The Stars (2009); Zarkava (2008) & Dylan Thomas (2007) announce him as a thoroughbred of the highest calibre - though just a touch unlucky with his timing. He is currently in the top 10 ranked racehorses of the world (equal 6th). Other contenders are Spanish Moon who defeated Youmzain in the Group One Grand Prix St-Cloud in June - and of course Viva Pataca, Hong Kong’s current horse of the year. One to look out for could be the lightly raced French 3 year old filly Daryakana, owned by the Aga Khan and trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre. She has outstanding staying potential and has improved with each challenge presented to her in France, rising at recent starts to victories in Listed company, then Group Two. French 3 year old gelding Cirrus Des Aigles has an improving (though already impressive) record with a last start win in the Group Two Prix Conseil de Paris - and never finishing further back than 4th in 20 career starts. An outsider is the New Zealand mare - now US trained - Black Mamba.
Latest betting:
Youmzain $4.40
Viva Pataca $4.80
Spanish Moon $6.50
Thumbs Up $9.00
Daryakana $9.00
Cirrus Des Aigles $10.00
others $18.00 to $61.00
my selections:
1 Youmzain
2 Daryakana
3 Cirrus Des Aigles
4 Viva Pataca
5 Spanish Moon
The Hong Kong International Mile (1600m) is looked upon as a grudge match between the local champions Good Ba Ba - looking to make it 3 wins in a row in this race - and the up and coming superstar Happy Zero. French filly Sweet Hearth has form around superstar Goldikova whensecond in the Group One Prix de la Foret, pushing Goldikova into third. Racing To Win is the Australian representative who was very impressive when resuming for the Spring Carnival - but subsequently disappointed. At his peak he had a speedfigure of 300 which would place him in great contention. Egyptian Ra is a resilient performer and second highest rated horse in Hong Kong on official ratings. He will most likely set the speed and take catching.
Latest betting:
Good Ba Ba $2.80
Happy Zero $3.60
Egyptian Ra $16.00
Fellowship $17.00
Sight Winner $18.00
Racing To Win (AUS) $18.00
Sweet Hearth $19.00
Confront $19.00
Alexandros $21.00
others $21.00 to $41.00
my selections:
1 Happy Zero
2 Good Ba Ba
3 Sweet Hearth
4 Egyptian Ra
5 Fellowship
The Hong Kong International Cup (2000m) is no less intriguing. Brilliant French entire Vision D’Etat is a multiple Group One winner including victory in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby). His only real failures have been when contesting (on two occasions) the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Standing in his way may be local champion Collection (a Hong Kong Derby winner) who is in impeccable form with a crushing win in the Cup Trial. Last year’s winner Eagle Mountain (selected to win by RacingWrite last year) is in the field again, along with Presvis and promising French filly Ashalanda.
Latest betting:
Collection $2.80
Presvis $3.50
Vision D’Etat $6.50
Eagle Mountain $8.00
Ashalanda $14.00
others $18.00 to $151.00
my selections:
1 Vision D’Etat
2 Collection
3 Presvis
4 Ashalanda
5 Eagle Mountain
