Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Hong Kong International Races 2010

December 10th 2010 10:41
The Hong Kong International meeting this Sunday at Sha Tin has assembled some exceptional fields across the four Group One events, these contested across the ‘equine championship distances’ of 1200m; 1600m; 2000m; and 2400m. A well balanced program of world class racing.

Race 4 The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase 2400m Group One.

1 Americain
2 Jaguar Mail
3 Mastery
4 Crystal Capella
5 Viva Pataca

Americain keeps on winning. Very impressive in his soft win in the Geelong Cup over the same distance - and his Melbourne Cup victory an exceptional effort in a very strong edition. Jaguar Mail a high class Japanese stayer over many seasons. A big danger.

Current odds (from Sportingbet):

American $3.80
Jaguar Mail $6.50
Crystal Capella $7.00
Viva Pataca $9.00
Mastery $9.50

Race 5 The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint 1200m Group One.

1 Rocket Man
2 Sacred Kingdom
3 Ortensia
4 Green Birdie
5 Kingsgate Native

Australian bred horses dominate this race - and I’ve went with that strength with the top 4 all being Australian bred. Rocket Man is an emerging champion who is trying to defeat the Wold Champion (or co-Champion) Sprinter for the past 3 years, Sacred Kingdom. Ortensia was very good behind ‘future World Sprinting Champion’ Black Caviar at Flemington. Great sprint race.

Sacred Kingdom $3.20
Rocket Man $3.40
JJ The Jet Plane $11.00
Ortensia & One World $12.00

Race 7 The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile 1600m Group One.

1 Paco Boy
2 Good Ba Ba
3 Able One
4 A Shin Forward
5 Thumbs Up

Paco Boy finally avoids the Champion Mare Goldikova at what will be his last race start. That could make the difference here. Good Ba Ba is looking for his 4th win in succession this race. Not appearing to be going as well as in the past, but has proven to be a freakish miler when at his best.

Paco Boy $3.80
Able One $5.00
Thumbs Up $8.00
Sahpresa $8.50
A Shin Forward $11.00
Good Ba Ba $15.00

Race 8 The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup 2000m Group One.

1 Snow Fairy
2 Vision D’Etat
3 Planteur
4 Collection
5 Cirrus Des Aigles

Snow Fairy is amazing Filly taking all before her with wins in the English and Irish Oaks - and a last start Group One win in Japan. Vision D’Etat is looking to win this race again (top selection by RacingWrite last year) and will be a huge danger. The only time he appears out of his depth is when competing in the ‘Arc’.

Vision D’Etat $3.70
Snow Fairy $4.40
Collection $5.50
Planteur $6.50
Cirrus Des Aigles $41.00
