Ruber Rex - a winning sequence

Last weekend in Victoria some well known grey horses were successful. The exciting Our Baby Bonus at Moonee Valley on Saturday - while on Sunday two grey horses were successful from the 8 race card at Cranbourne. One was the resilient 6 year old Lion Hunter gelding, Jungle Ruler. At his 80th career start - and carrying the burden of 60.5 kg on a heavy track - his jockey Danny Brereton pinched the 2nd Heat of the VRC-CRV Winter Championship (1400m) with a clever front-running ride. Although several leaders were engaged in the race they all allowed Brereton to dictate off a moderate tempo, then sprint clear before turning for home and win easily by 2.8 lengths.
The other grey to win was the Testa Rossa 5 year old gelding Ruber Rex. Not nearly as well known as Jungle Ruler - and not remotely as discussed as Our Baby Bonus - nonetheless this striking grey gelding produced a career best performance to circle the field to narrowly win. Perhaps not a horse destined for great fame - but well worth remembering that he has won 50% of the time that he has raced on heavy tracks (3 wins from 6 tries). The long odds on offer indicating that few knew of his liking for soft ground.
But he is highlighted on this occasion because Neil Murray captured his resolute finishing burst in sequence, illustrating just how determined he was to win. In his yellow and purple silks (with yellow girth, winkers, and bandages) he and jockey Jordan Mallyon defy anyone not to take interest and look at them.
