Yea racetrack is one of many country racetracks to host picnic racemeetings.

On Sunday (February the 28th) Yea hosted the St Pats Cup - with the consistent Lay Back Lad winning easily by 5 lengths from runner-up Champion Chestnut. That was the second Picnic Cup win this season for the Gordon Strang trained 10 year old gelding who won the Merton Cup on the 1st of January.
Lay Back Lad mixes his picnic winning form with ventures to provincial and metropolitan racedays - having consecutive (unsuccessful) starts at Moonee Valley among his 5 starts between Cup wins. Jockey Shiralee Waddell has ridden him in both Cup victories - and this win follows her double at Healesville picnic races the day before.
Lay Back Lad started at $8.00.
Yea racetrack is 105 km north east of Melbourne.
Yea is one of the many picturesque racetracks that offer excellent opportunities for photographing some exciting racing. Neil Murray was in attendance and captured several great photographs.
The photograph above is from race 2 (1200m) where three horses stretch across the track in the run to the finish line. From inside to outside we have: Prince Rhubarb (2nd); Stratton Place (3rd); and eventual winner Vixinite coming down the outside.
Below is race 3 (1580m) with Adam Bodey on War Cries $2.80 favourite (seemingly) well clear - only to be run down by $21.00 outsider Rissy Roo in the latter stages.

Watch the video of Lay Back Lad winning the St Pats Cup at Yea. In particular note the picturesque nature of the racetrack - and also the crowd of substantial proportions that would be something of envy for many metropolitan racetracks.
