At was the third time that Maskiell has ridden a Melbourne treble - and on each occasion it has been at Moonee Valley.
Jason Maskiell, in riding his 50th metropolitan winner when successful in race one, lost his 2 kilogram apprentices claim. In future he will only be able to claim 1.5 kg. Not that this should stand in his way as Maskiell has more than double the winners of the next closest apprentice, Brent Evans on 24 wins - and he is just 7 wins behind Melbourne’s leading jockey, Luke Nolen, in the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership. This is a spectacular rise for Jason Maskiell as he rode his first winner - not surprisingly at Moonee Valley - on Awimoweh in June of last year.
Two of his winners are highly regarded: the unbeaten Our Baby Bonus, and the very talented Beyond Pardon. Both of these grey horses were front-running rides, and both were judged very well. The third winner was the 2 year old Enzed Girl who overcame difficulties to win.
And it was nearly four winners. Maskiell lost narrowly by a short head on favourite Bird Of Fire who just failed to outlast Tindal in a two-horse-war down the straight.
Unfortunately Jason was suspended for 12 meetings for careless riding for his ride aboard Beyond Pardon. He started the suspension immediately and will be available to complete his booking on the Bart Cummings trained Russeting in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400 metres) at Eagle Farm on June the 12th.
Both Beyond Pardon and Tindal (a winner @ $8.00) had best career speed for their races - as identified by Speedratings.
