Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Warren and Dunn double

Warren and Dunn, Team Double

A Neil Murray report for RacingWrite and Thoroughbreds Worldwide. Photography and words by Neil Murray.

Trainer Jason Warren and jockey Dwayne Dunn teamed up for an impressive winning double at Mornington on 12/7/2011. Both winning horses, Red Savina and Vacqueyras, were maidens, and both won emphatically.

Red Savina a 4yo bay mare was formerly in the Mark Kavanagh stable before coming to Jason Warren. Under Kavanagh the mare showed some good form, placing in five of her eight starts but without winning. This time, in a Maiden Plate over 1000 metres at Mornington, Dwayne Dunn positioned Red Savina close to the leaders until the home turn before cruising around them to hit the front at the top of the straight. From there it was a matter of how far; the final margin being five and a half lengths to second placegetter, Donkey Dan, ridden by Lisa Cropp.

In the next race, another Maiden Plate over 1200 metres, Jason Warren had the well performed 3yo bay colt, Vacqueyras. Again, Dwayne Dunn had Vacqueyras nicely positioned to the home turn, then went around them to hit the front and pull away to score by almost four lengths from Amelia Rose ridden by Dale Smith.
