Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Able Speed: building momentum

July 7th 2011 22:03
It took 24 starts over two seasons for the UK Group Winning Able Speed to finally win in Hong Kong. But after the initial success, the floodgates have now opened.

In 2008 the Richard Hannon trained (then named) Prolific won the Group Two Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. Soon the son of Compton Place would find himself relocated to Hong Kong by virtue of the Tattersalls Horses-In-Training Sale.

Trainer John Moore was frustrated when his well credentialed stable acquisition was slow to find success, stymied by both throat surgery to rectify a wind problem, and later a heart irregularity. But after enduring much frustration (and 24 losing starts) Able Speed won his first race in Hong Kong on the 1st of May 2011 - and subsequently has won two of his next three starts. His latest success coming on the 1st of July, piloted by Olivier Doleuze, winning the Hong Kong Reunification Cup over 1200 metres at Sha Tin. Able Speed defeated Rich Unicorn (Douglas Whyte), with stablemate Leading City (John Lloyd) in 3rd placing.

Now making up for lost time, it is hoped that Able Speed may blossom into the Group performer in Hong Kong that was expected from the beginning.
