Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Sha Tin Highlights

Woody Leung was on hand to capture all of the action at Sha Tin on the 29th of May - including The Standard Chartered Champion & Chater Cup (HKG1) run over 2400 metres and won narrowly by Mighty High. Winning jockey Darren Beadman has suggested to trainer John Moore that they bring the 5 year old (foaled in France) son of Peintre Celebre to Melbourne this spring to have an attempt at the 2011 Melbourne Cup. Mighty High defeated Mr Medici by a short head - with Viva Pataca 3 1/4 lengths away in 3rd placing. Mr Medici came to Melbourne last year and finished 6th in the 2010 Caulfield Cup, and 10th in the 2010 Melbourne Cup (behind Americain).

Dim Sum repeated his 2010 victory in the (HKG3) Sha Tin Vase (1200 metres) with a win in the 2011 renewal of the same race - defeating his stablemate Sunny King. This was also another success for the combination of trainer John Moore and jockey Darren Beadman. The only race won by Dim Sum other than the Sha Tin Vase in the past 12 months has been his upset result in defeating champion Sacred Kingdom back in February at Sha Tin in the (HKG1) Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m).

The closest finish of the day went to Kingston Spartacus (Eddie Lai) who won by a nose from Humongus (Zac Purton) in the 1600 metre Super Win Handicap. The first four horses (Lucky Emperor 3rd & Medic Fortune 4th) went across the line with barely a neck between first and fourth.
