Two Sadlers and a snake

There are five horses nominated for the 2009 Melbourne Cup trained by John Sadler.

These are:
C’Est La Guerre
Efficient
Renewable
Zipping
and Black Mamba.
The first four are trained by John Sadler for leviathan owner Lloyd Williams. The primary focus of team Williams/Sadler is to win a Melbourne Cup. No effort or expense is spared in securing either the best staying bloodlines, or the best tried stayers.
Efficient is the Melbourne Cup winner of 2007, a VRC Derby winner, and a horse blessed with exceptional staying prowess. He was purchased for Williams by then trainer, Graham Rogerson, at the 2005 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Sale for $220,000. Although a gelding with no residual value, his stake-winnings of $4.131 million is testament to the research and expertise that can recognise a bargain - even if the bargain comes initially at a premium price.
C’Est La Guerre was purchased by Williams for an undisclosed price after winning the 2008 New Zealand Derby. And you can guess that after such an emphatic 4 length win in the Derby the asking price would have been substantial.
Lloyd Williams stated that he did not believe the Shinko King gelding seasoned enough for the 2008 Melbourne Cup, but C’Est La Guerre ran a sensational race to finish 3rd behind Viewed and (nose away second) Bauer in the Melbourne Cup.
This would be the year marked as target for C’Est La Guerre all along. He should furnish a far more robust horse this campaign.
Any individual owner can be lost in the ‘roll call’ of a large training enterprise, being just one of many hundreds, all with eager voices and opinions, but by necessity each voice kept to a whisper. But a private trainer operates upon a far different dynamic, a shared focus and vision making the training enterprise a team.
It is unlikely that Zipping or Renewable will progress further along to acceptance for the Melbourne Cup. But for differing reasons. Zipping is a brilliant stayer - though not best suited by the marathon staying trip. He has been valiant at his three previous attempts with two brave fourth placings - and an unlucky 9th last year when checked. But perhaps this time he will be reserved for other races. Renewable has been a remarkable ‘project’ for Lloyd Williams and John Sadler - and after not racing for two years he came back in 2009 to win two races. But a Melbourne Cup may be a bridge too far.
John Sadler - meet John Sadler. John W Sadler to be precise. Trainer of New Zealand foaled, but now US trained mare, Black Mamba.
Black Mamba recently won her second Group Two Beverly Hills Handicap (1 1/4 miles). This six year old Black Minnaloushe mare was a bit dour on the firm turf and took a long time to reel in the opposition in the last stride after coming from last.
“He [Gomez] picked her up and pushed her over. This turf course has been a little speed favoring this year, and they weren’t coming back as much as I thought they would. She’s been a really good mare for us. We have all of her vaccinations ready for the Melbourne Cup and we’re really thinking about it.” - trainer John Sadler, as told to The Thoroughbred Times.
“She didn’t make anything easy for me today. The fractions were honest enough, but she’s a little one-paced. She’s just kind of steady and long-striding— she just keeps coming. Today I thought she would take it to ‘em somewhere along the way, but she really wouldn’t help out too much. She made my job a little more difficult. But she got the job done and hopefully she’ll get some confidence back from this race.” - jockey Garrett Gomez, as told to Hollywoodpark.com
Before being transferred to the US Black Mamba continually ran into Champion Mare Princess Coup and was placed 4th behind her in the Group Three Lowland Stakes, before (in her final New Zealand appearance) finishing 5th to Princess Coup in the 2007 New Zealand Oaks.
Black Mamba now has 5 wins from 26 starts and career earnings of $US808,851.
Given the recent performances of Black Mamba, and coupled with the foundation of her southern hemisphere history, it might be a distinct possibility that we will have a US representative in the Melbourne Cup of 2009.
And two John Sadler’s vying for the same prize.
