The Group One July Cup continued the jinx for Australian sprinting visitors to England with both Scenic Blast and Takeover Target well beaten.

Scenic Blast never appeared to be travelling with his trademark ease and may not have relished the undulating track when put under pressure.
The winner was Fleeting Spirit who had trained on from her very impressive King’s Stand Stakes second to Scenic Blast to record a brilliant - though erratic and controversial - victory. Although in full flight and looking the winner, Fleeting Spirit was allowed to run an erratic criss-cross path by jockey Tom Queally which resulted in second placed Main Aim being severely checked. A stewards’ inquiry was necessary to gauge the degree of interference.
Behind Main Aim came Paco Boy in third, and JJ The Jet Plane from South Africa in fourth.
There were no surprise in the win by Fleeting Spirit - and the third and fourth placings by Paco Boy and JJ The Jet Plane. The superb performance from Main Aim - and the failure of Scenic Blast - were the two unexpected events.
And the news for Australia gets worse with the report that Takeover Target was found to have cracked a cannon bone in his near hind leg and is undergoing surgery at the Newmarket Veterinary Hospital. This would almost certainly spell the end of his illustrious career - and we can only hope that Takeover Target makes a full recovery to enjoy his retirement.
