Rising 8 year old grey gelding Jungle Ruler is a frequent sight on the Melbourne racing scene, having 90 starts across 5 seasons of racing. In that time he has won 18 times, with another 22 placings, and amassed over $750,000 in prize-money.
Trainer Peter White races the showy grey into form, rather than presenting him fully wound-up when resuming, and the son of Lion Hunter is renowned for the length of his campaigns. Before returning for this campaign after a 21 week spell, Jungle Ruler had 21 starts in his last 9 month campaign - and 20 starts during his previous 8 month campaign.
Punter have a love-hate relationship with Jungle Ruler: loving his free-going front-running style; his distinctive grey coat; and his courage under pressure. And hating the fact that he often wins at long odds, these wins coming after a last-start run that gives no indication of future success.
Last Saturday at Flemington Darren Gauci jumped Jungle Ruler to the front and dictated the tempo to achieve a relatively easily win at 10/1 in Heat 4 of the Winter Championship Series (1400 metres). He defeated Mr Griswold (Dale Smith) by three-quarters of a length; with Melete (Jordan Mallyon) 2.3 lengths away in 3rd position. At his previous start Jungle Ruler finished a 14.2 length last at Caulfield - this following an 8.5 length 12th at Flemington. Admittedly Jungle Ruler displays his best when allowed to lead - and Darren Gauci (as his regular jockey) has few peers when controlling the speed from the front of the field.
In 2009 Jungle Ruler similarly won when coming off a last placing to subsequently win at 25/1. Once again leading all the way.
Although Jungle Ruler often produces the unexpected result, what can usually be expected is to find Jungle Ruler leading the field and desperately trying to defy catching.
