Splash Of Vanilla
January 18th 2009 23:09
Amid the dark climate of the financial gloom and doom, Keeneland added colour (novelty, perhaps) and interest when the white colt White Prince was a show stopper and auction success - then to follow this with the first ever palomino to be catalogued for a Keeneland sale.
“I was surprised. I didn’t know that The Jockey Club registered Thoroughbreds as palominos, but they obviously do. It will add a little bit of an extra twist to the sale like it does when we sell white horses.” - Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland director of sales.
The two year old, Splash Of Vanilla, is the only one of only 31 registered thoroughbreds from the (US) crop of 2007 (it totalling 34,350) known to be offered at auction.
Due to their colour, however, palominos often are sought as show horses more so than racehorses. Kevin Lay, who co-bred Splash of Vanilla with Thomas Bentley, is offering the Minnesota-bred filly under his Minneapolis-based Triple B Stables banner as a racing or broodmare prospect. But he hopes that Splash of Vanilla can become a racehorse.
The only difference they have from other Thoroughbreds is their colour, which can occur when a chestnut and a palomino are bred to each other.
Splash of Vanilla is by Minnesota-based Ballado Chieftan, a chestnut, and is the first foal out of unraced Maid of Gold T B, a palomino, by Guaranteed Gold - who is also a palomino.
“She got all the things from her mother that we wanted to get from her mother–mostly the calmness and the colour. From her father, I think she’s got better pasterns than her mother—all the pieces from the racing part of it we got, so we think we got the best from both, the best of all worlds. Her palomino colour goes back six generations on the dam’s side” - Kevin Lay.
“The catalogue page isn’t great compared to some other black type that you see, and so I hope that when they see her they bring people out that will look at her as a serious racehorse. I asked the guy that was prepping her [for the sale], ’Is there anything that you could find, any reason that you can find that they wouldn’t look at her as a racehorse?’ and I could get nobody to tell me that they could find that thing.” - Kevin Lay.
“Our goal three years ago when we started this thing was to get a racing palomino, get a filly racing palomino, preferably a stakes-placed or stakes quality in a regional program…and then upgrade the stallion quality…and then maybe in a decade you’ve got a whole bunch of running palominos.” -Kevin Lay.
Splash Of Vanilla was eventually sold for $14,000 to Dr. Naveen Chowhan. Her pedigree page reads even less hopeful than that of White Prince - Splash Of Vanilla having only 2 winners in the first three generations.
It’s a novelty. Dr. Chowhan already has a white filly in training with Bernie Flint. She (Splash of Vanilla) is a pretty filly, and she doesn’t have any holes in her. No horse is born with black type; I think it has a lot to do with the (owner and trainer’s) programs. She’ll get a shot (to race).” Chip Muth, for Dr. Chowan.
Muth said he was the underbidder, on Chowan’s behalf, earlier in the day on the grade III-winning and stakes-producing Mr. Prospector mare Race Artist, who sold for $85,000, the session's highest price.
Dr. Chowhan, an oncologist, raced Runway Model, who scored in the 2004 Darley Alcibiades (gr. II, at Keeneland) and Golden Rod (gr. II) Stakes. Her other efforts included a second in the 2005 Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland and a third in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I). In addition, Dr. Chowhan is the breeder of Awesome Humor, who captured four graded events, including the 2002 Spinaway Stakes (gr. I).
