Yeung Again at Happy Valley

While all the attention seems to be focussed on Melbourne and the running of the 150th Melbourne Cup, Neil Murray is in Hong Kong reporting on the Asian racing scene. Here is another report from Neil from Happy Valley that incorporates his excellent photography.

Yeung Again at Happy Valley
Hong Kong's Happy Valley track usually holds evening meetings of a Wednesday. Very occasionally this format is interrupted by a day meeting held on a Sunday. Such was the case last Sunday afternoon. And the race card was keenly contested, with three jockeys riding doubles, Matthew Chadwick, Gerald Mosse and Keith Yeung. The previous week at Sha Tin, young apprentice, Keith Yeung had surprised by taking out the Jockey Challenge at long odds. And last Sunday at Happy Valley he repeated the dose, although at much shorter odds. Keith rode two winners, one second, two thirds and a fourth to just pip the well fancied Gerald Mosse.
Keith's first winner came in the second race on the card, the Wah Fu Handicap over 1650 metres. He rode the Almond Lee trained gelding, Nicku, who drew away at the 150 metres to record a comfortable one and a quarter length win. Then in race seven, the Cheung Hong Handicap over 1200 metres, Keith rode the John Size trained gelding, Tuscan Spirit ($5.60). In a well judged ride, Keith positioned Tuscan Spirit nicely in third place early, holding his position to the 200 metres when he threw the challenge out to the leader, Royal Flush, ridden by Zac Purton. In a close call Tuscan Spirit just scraped home on the line by a nose. Keith had to ride a second place in race eight and a fourth in race nine before getting enough points to overtake Gerald Mosse and win the Challenge.
Leading Hong Kong jockeys Brett Prebble and Douglas Whyte were out of action, Prebble suspended and Whyte riding in Japan.
