Big Brown: classic winner (but maybe not a classic name)
May 4th 2008 00:40
One of the biggest racing events of the year is the Kentucky Derby (it's on dirt, but I still love it).
Is ‘Big Brown’ a classic name? There is a timeless quality to the names of some of the more renowned winners of the Kentucky Derby:
Northern Dancer; Secretariat; Seattle Slew; Affirmed; Spectacular Bid; Sunday Silence; Alysheba; and even Fusaichi Pegasus.
Big Brown? Ah, what’s in a name? By mere weight of significance this name already grows in stature and resonance. His brilliant five length victory left Eight Belles (the only filly in the field, and tragically euthanised after shattering both front ankles) in his powerful wake, and the third placegetter (Denis Of Cork) and remainder of the field diminished by the ease of his victory. Starting from barrier twenty, Big Brown raced deep, circled the leaders five wide on turning for home, and still won with consummate ease.

Big Brown remains undefeated after four career starts and is the seventh unbeaten Kentucky Derby winner. He also rates as one of the most inexperienced winners with Regret in 1915 being the last horse to win after also having only three career starts before the Derby. So many aspects of this victory rate him as being exceptional. His combined winning margins in his four starts now stands at an amazing 34 lengths. Surely the triple crown with victory in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes looks within his scope, which would make him the first triple crown winner since the champion Affirmed in 1978.
Big Brown. Maybe not a classic name, but certainly a name to remember.
