Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

In the next seven days there will be Australian sprinters on display at racetracks around the world. Coming up first will be Starspangledbanner, now trained by Aidan O’Brien, competing in the (6f) Group 2 Duke of York Stakes at York. Aidan O’Brien will attempt to do for Starspangledbanner what he did for Haradasun - ultimately winning a Group One event in the UK to further enhance (and internationalise) his credentials as a sire. Haradasun won the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Duke of York Stakes is often considered as a starting point for sprinters launching Summer campaigns with targets as the King’s Stand Stakes and Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in mind.

By the time we get to Royal Ascot Starspangledbanner will be joined by fellow Australian sprinters Nicconi; Alverta - and perhaps Gold Trail.

Gold Trail is currently in Singapore ready to contest the $US1 million Group One Krisflyer International Sprint (1200m) at Kranji on Sunday. He is reported to be impressive in training. But he will need to be. And more.

Standing in his way is the local champion sprinter Rocket Man.

Rocket Man is a 4 year old Australian bred (Viscount - out of Macrosa) gelding who has won 9 from 11 starts - and arguably should still be undefeated. in the 2009 Krisflyer Rocket Man was narrowly defeated by the champion Sacred Kingdom. He then returned to racing after injury and a long spell to win easily at Kranji - before a very unlucky 2nd at Meydan in the Group One Dubai Golden Shaheen. Returning home he easily won the Lion City Cup last start. A campaign in England for Gold Trail hinges on a good performance in Singapore. Eagle Falls is another Australian horse running in the Krisflyer. He was inconvenienced when 5th in the Golden Shaheen last start and he will be one who will be closing strongly.

Along with Rocket Man, other Australian bred / or trained sprinters now resident in Singapore and competing in the 2010 Krisflyer include: Happy Zero; Green Birdie; Cheyenne Dancer; and Ntini.

Betting on the Krisflyer (Sportingbet):

Rocket Man $1.80

Happy Zero $3.70

Joy And Fun $10.00

Green Birdie $12.00

Eagle Falls $12.00

Gold Trail $16.00

Mexican Rose $16.00

Mariol $67.00

Cheyenne Dancer $101.00

Ntini $126.00

Betting on the Duke of York (Paddy Power):

5/2 Main Aim
7/2 Showcasing
9/2 Starspangledbanner
