The Filly Likes Pink
On March 9, 2011 a filly named La Nez won the Irish O’Brien Stakes at Santa Anita, it was the fifth win of her career. When her trainer, Eric Kruljac, was interviewed after the race he said, “She likes pink.” He was referring to the pink saddle cloth with the black No. 8, part of the color coded saddle cloth system here in the United States.

I went back through the past performances of La Nez and I think the trainer may be right. La Nez has been assigned the No. 8 pink saddle cloth five times. She won four of those races all of them in $100,000 stakes for Cal-breds and finished third in the other race running against the boys (pictured here). Her only win not wearing No. 8 was her maiden victory at age two when she was No. 4.
La Nez is a 4 year old filly by Storm Creek out of the Iz A Saros mare Iza Bay. She was bred by the trainer’s brother J. Chance Kruljac. Since breaking her maiden in her third career start most of her races have been in stakes competition. As a two year old she was third in the Grade I Darley Debutante at Del Mar, second in that race was Blind Luck who would go on to win the Kentucky Oaks the following year. Two months later La Nez made it to the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, finishing a disappointing 6th in her first race with a new jockey, new silks, new distance and a new surface. Tapitsfly who won that race did not race again for 14 months, while La Nez raced another 10 times including 3 more wins. She has specialized in sprinting distances of 6 to 7 furlongs and won on all three racing surfaces dirt, turf and all weather. Look for the odds to be short the next time La Nez carries the No. 8 pink saddle cloth.
