Life At Ten

Life At Ten was an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Beldame Stakes (9 furlongs) on dirt at Belmont Park last Saturday. This was her 8th win from 16 starts - and her 7th win from her past 8 starts.
The only defeat suffered by Life At Ten (trained by Todd Pletcher) in her recent winning sequence came at her previous start in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, when jockey John Velazquez unwisely forced a speed duel with the recently retired 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra - ultimately ensuring the downfall of both, as Persistently was able to sit off their hectic pace and come home for a surprise victory.
But in the Beldame Stakes Velasquez allowed the 5 year old Malibu Moon mare to sit off the early speed and close from the home turn to come away for an impressive 2 length win over the favourite Unrivalled Belle (who defeated Rachel Alexandra earlier this season in the La Troienne at Churchill Downs).
"It worked out perfectly, she broke well and got us in a good position. When those two horses went, she settled really well behind those two. When we passed the half-mile pole, I put her in the clear and let her get to that cruising speed that she has. She started going at a good, comfortable speed and she was going well, and I was just hoping when I asked her, she’d respond, and she responded all the way.” - John Velazquez, as told to The Thoroughbred Times.
