Linda Meech - a guest contribution from Neil Murray
June 1st 2010 01:25
Neil Murray can be found at both metropolitan and provincial racetracks in Victoria capturing images of all the racing action. From the racing royalty at Flemington - to the picnic races at Woolamai - Neil is present and seeking to find images that portray all of the drama and beauty that is horseracing.
Neil has just produced a photojournalism article on Linda Meech which I have the pleasure to reproduce today on RacingWrite.
I welcome contributions from anyone wishing to have their work published on RacingWrite - especially those racing enthusiasts from America; Europe; or Asia.

For those who follow Melbourne metropolitan meeetings, the name of jockey, Linda Meech, crops up only occasionally. But for those who follow Victorian country meetings, the name Linda Meech crops up more than any other on the winners list. At present, Linda leads the country jockey list with 86 wins. Her nearest rival, Brad Rawiller trails her with 67 wins. Last season, 2008/2009, Linda topped the country list with 105 wins.

At present, Linda has the good fortune - and well earned - to be riding for successful Caulfield trainer, Peter Moody. Luke Nolen is Moody's leading stable jockey, so Linda has to play second fiddle to him. However, at Cranbourne on Sunday May 30, Linda got the better of Luke. Peter Moody had two entrants in a two year old maiden plate over 1400 metres. Luke Nolen rode Riptide and Linda rode Moody's other entrant, Serene Diva. There was very little between the pair in pre-race betting, with Serene Diva just edging out Riptide as favourite.
Half way down the straight, Luke Nolen had Riptide travelling nicely near the fence and looking every bit the winner. Serene Diva was still a long way back but Linda had the filly finishing out wide, in what appeared to be better ground, and closing with a vengeance. Serene Diva closed the gap to win by a third of a length on the line. So, Linda notched up yet another country win. Looks like she's got a stranglehold on the country jockey premiership again this season.
