Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Cropp fractures skull

December 8th 2010 04:24
Riding a racehorse in the heat and battle of a race is a very dangerous occupation.

But race riding is simply the apex of danger for those who choose to ride horses. Whether thoroughbred, or leisure hack, riding can be very dangerous. Life can change (or end) in an instant.

We should not forget that even Superman - Christopher Reeve - lived a restricted life requiring a respirator and a wheelchair after breaking his neck when competing in an equestrian event in 1995 (Christopher Reeve died in 2004).

Actor John Hurt - while preparing for his role as a jockey in the 1983 film, Champions, lost his partner when she fell while the couple were riding near their home.

In the month of November the (now Melbourne based) New Zealand Champion Jockey Lisa Cropp rode 14 winners - including a treble at Sandown on the 28th of November. This was her first month back to race riding after serving a long suspension in New Zealand.

However, Lisa Cropp was suspended for 14 meetings by stewards’ after causing interference at Caulfield on the 4th of December.

While on suspension Cropp returned to New Zealand and was involved in a riding accident yesterday while out riding a pony with her daughter. Lisa Cropp suffered a fractured skull and is currently in hospital. She will be discharged from hospital this week - but is likely to be out of the saddle for a few ‘extra weeks’.

Update:

Latest news reveals that it was not so much a riding accident that caused the fractured skull, but the result of being wedged underneath a pony she was educating for her daughter when the pony ran through a fence.
