Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Lopov

August 4th 2011 07:45
On the final metropolitan race day of season 2010-2011 Lopov lined up for his third consecutive Saturday of racing when successful at Caulfield.

The bay son of Savabeel had been luckless at his previous two starts after defeating You Think So (not to be confused with So You Think) the start before.

This time his trainer Danny O’Brien engaged the services of Glen Boss - a jockey without peers when riding over a distance - and he was not let down as jockey and horse were a great combination and a positive ride led to a positive result, a 2.3 length victory.

Few horses line up for a race on three consecutive Saturdays. And few would race so consistently on each occasion. Lopov has raced 11 times this current campaign since resuming in late March. He has been successful 4 times in this period, has been placed 3 times, and has also had two very unlucky 4th placings.

After winning over 2412 metres last Saturday - proving that he can run the trip - he is among the early nominations for the $2.5 million BMW Caulfield Cup to be run on the 15th of October. Perhaps this will prove a task too daunting, but the tough and brave 4 year old is at least a proven winner at the track and distance.
