Macarthur

Aidan O'Brien has among his list of entries for the feature Melbourne Spring Carnival races his promising 4 year old Montjeu entire, Macarthur.
Twice a winner this campaign, beginning with his second up success at Chester in May when he ran away from rivals to win by four lengths over 1 mile 5 furlongs and 89 yards, defeating Supersonic Dave, with Carte Diamond in third position (Carte Diamond was a visitor to Melbourne in 2005 when midfield behind Railings in the Caulfield Cup - then famously and horrifically became impaled in a training accident before the Melbourne Cup. He nearly died on that occasion; then fought off infection; before breaking down again with a tendon injury the following year. That he even returned to the track again is a miracle).
O'Brien then stepped Macarthur up to Group One class in a high quality field in the Juddmonte Coronation Cup (1 1/2 miles) at Epsom on June the 6th. This was a mighty performance where he raced on the speed and threatened to defeat some of Europe's best staying horses even after suffering interference. The winner was Soldier Of Fortune (favourite and his stablemate); with Arc runner-up of 2007 Youmzain flashing home for (another unlucky) second. Behind Macarthur were the highly ranked (Timeform and World Rankings) Papal Bull (4th) and Getaway (5th). In sixth position was Red Rocks, the conqueror of Curlin at his next start in the Man O'War Stakes (Group One on turf) in the US.
Current betting for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe would testify to the merit of this performance with:
Zarkava 7/2
Soldier Of Fortune 5/1
Duke Of Marmalade 6/1
New Approach 7/1
Youmzain 10/1
Papal Bull 12/1
Getaway 14/1
Macarthur followed this with a brave and fighting win in the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes of 1 1/2 miles at Ascot on the 21st of June. Once again he raced on the speed, found the front under siege, but this time fought off all challengers in the run to the line. Finishing behind him in 5th position was Jane Chapple-Hyam's Melbourne Cup aspirant, Yellowstone.
At his last start (at time of writing) Macarthur took on the silk department again and contested the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Group One over 1 1/2 miles at Ascot. He was (as is often the case) one of three Ballydoyle entries for this race with the others being 4th placed (at 125/1) Red Rock Canyon; and champion stayer Duke Of Marmalade the other and ultimate winner over perennial rivals, Papal Bull and (the unlucky - ever and again) Youmzain.
This was a race where the speed was fast and Macarthur one of three horses keen to be in (or near to the) front. And to be expected, the first three home came from midfield or the rear of the field, while the pacemakers all wilted. Not to contend that he was just a pacemaker this time for Duke Of Marmalade - but the preferred Ballydoyle horse was successful.
Macarthur has raced 10 times for three wins and three thirds. In his three year old year he was considered by Ballydolye to be an Epsom Derby horse before losing his way later in his preparation.
Macarthur's other win was on debut at Navan in a Maiden over 1 mile on a heavy track when he won by three lengths. He has won from 1 mile to I mile & 5 furlongs.
Macarthur is by Montjeu out of Gone West. He is a brother to 2005 Group One Epsom Derby winner Motivator.
