Makfi defeats Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois

Champion mare Goldikova was defeated for the first time this season when the English 2,000 Guineas winner Makfi returned to the winning list with a spectacular victory in the richest mile race in Europe, the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

On the very soft rated track Goldikova travelled with customary ease, but was unable to show her usual acceleration when asked to let down by jockey Olivier Peslier. After equalling Miesque’s record of 10 Group/Grade 1 victories it was expected that Goldikova would break the record, starting as she did at 6/4 favourite.
Makfi mirrored his 2,000 Guineas victory with an undeniable late sprint to the post that swept him past the valiant mare. Paco Boy attempted to come with him and raced up to Goldikova, but once again was not able to beat her home as she fought back to hold second placing.
Goldikova is still on target for her record-breaking third Breeders’ Cup Mile in November, but she is likely to have to contend with Makfi at Churchill Downs as that is also the long-term plan for the brilliant Dubawi colt. Makfi, a 33/1 winner of the 2,000 Guineas, has been able to bounce back to his very best after an unplaced run in the St James’s Palace Stakes when he was found to be suffering from a throat infection. He handles both soft and firm ground - but obviously Goldikova will have her best chance of turning the tables if the track is firm for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Goldikova's electrifying turn-of-foot is dulled on soft tracks and negates (or at least lessens) her greatest asset.
Christophe Soumillon was the new jockey for Makfi in the Marois and declared on unsaddling: "This colt is the new Sea The Stars!"
Goldikova, Makfi, and Paco Boy, are all likely to meet again before Churchill Downs in the Prix Foret.
