Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Caulfield Highlights 11th of February

February 14th 2012 05:09
Three of the best (Caviar not on this menu) from last Saturday at Caulfield.

All photos by Neil Murray. Click for enlargements.

The Aaron Purcell trained Spirit Song wins her 4th race from 5 starts since resuming for this campaign.

Spirit Song (Brad Rawiller - outside) claims Our Spirits Bay (2nd Jake Noonan) on his way to an easy 2.8 length win

Peter Moody waves his magic wand over the 'dour stayer' Manighar and gets the him to win over 1600 metres first-up for the new stable. Always on the speed - and the only horse surging forward when pacemaker Shadowfax (Michael Rodd) had all others chasing off-the-bit and struggling. Yeah - and the grey can stay a bit too.

Luke Nolen moves the grey Manighar past Shout Out Loud (unplaced) and gives chase to Shadowfax (out of picture). Manighar runs out a 1.8 length winner

Pied A Terre atones for the only defeat in his career (last start 2nd in Listed company against the older horses) when he bounces back for a G2 win against his own age.

Another article about Pied A Terre is on Thoroughbreds Worldwide.

Pied A Terre (Mark Zahra) claims the weakening Collar (unplaced - Steven King) and skips clear to score another win.
