Mick and the Maidens
December 8th 2009 04:32
Mick Price brought his very talented 3 year old gelding Marconi to Caulfield last Saturday to see him produce an emphatic winning performance, leading easily and then letting down when asked for an effort from Craig Newitt to win by 5.5 lengths. This followed the Lago Delight gelding’s debut at Stony Creek when he hit the ground running and decimated a field of maidens with a 6 length victory. Two starts - and a combined winning margin of 11.5 lengths. It is expected that this horse - named as a tribute to veteran trainer Jim Marconi who raced Lago Delight - will rise to Listed or Group Company.

At Cranbourne, the following day to Marconi's metropolitan debut, Mick Price produced another ultra impressive maiden winner in the shape of 3 year old Testa Rossa gelding Testa My Patience. This horse was beaten into 2nd placing on debut at Cranbourne in a 1300m Maiden, but returning 2 weeks later to the same venue over the slightly longer 1400m trip he toyed with his opposition to win by 4 lengths.
I would expect Price to produce Testa My Patience at a city racemeeting over the Summer months.
Neil Murray captured both of these promising horses winning their Maiden races. If you look at the close up view of jockey Peter Mertens and Testa My Patience you will see a horse very comfortable and under no stress - or duress - going on to win as he pleased. It is always considered a huge step up from Maiden winner to metropolitan winner in the space of one run. But perhaps lightning will strike twice for Price when Testa My Patience is produced in Melbourne?
