Fifteen

From Marmalade to Mastercraftsman - the Ballydoyle juggernaut rolls on this week and Aidan O’Brien draws ever closer to the record of Group One wins in a season with number fifteen, through the efforts of the unbeaten Mastercraftsman at The Curragh.

Ridden by Johnny Murtagh (his 13th Group One in combination with O’Brien) Mastercraftsman powered away to win the Independent Waterford Wedgewood Crystal Stakes (6 furlongs) by four and a half lengths from the well fancied English raider (even money favourite) Art Connoisseur.
With typical Ballydolye planning and precision, stablemate Sea Of Marmara set a strong pace and had the field struggling at the half way point. Mastercraftsman (4/1) stalked in second place and when his stablemate had run out of steam he took over and was never in danger of defeat.
The runner-up Art Connoisseur was also previously undefeated and may have been too far behind the pace in this race. Although they respect the winner, the stable believe that their horse ran below his best on this occasion.
After this victory William Hill Bookmakers cut the odds on Mastercraftsman from 20/1 to 6/1 early favourite for the English 2,000 Guineas of 2009. Aidan O’Brien also trains the current second favourite, Rip Van Winkle.
Both Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh believed that the Danehill Dancer colt would appreciate a fast pace as they believe that already he is looking for 7 furlongs.
Mastercraftsman is now unbeaten at three starts. Each win over 6 furlongs at The Curragh.
