Mastercraftsman (horse and trainer)

Mastercraftsman became Group One winner number twenty this year for (mastercraftsman) trainer Aidan O’Brien when he narrowly won the National Stakes at the Curragh on very heavy ground. This was also win number seven for O’Brien in Ireland’s premier juvenile event.
Mastercraftsman is still unbeaten after four starts and was returning from a 49 day break since winning the Phoenix Stakes. Unlike Group One win number nineteen for O'Brien (Septimus - by thirteen lengths) this was a close decision (short head) after a prolonged duel over the final three furlongs with Shaweel.
Mastercraftsman drifted in the betting to 9/4 with the uncertainty that he would handle the very wet conditions. Arazan was backed into 9/10 favourite as a result of his ability to handle such conditions, but could only finish 3rd, some 2 1/2 lengths further back.
'He has to be very good to do what he has done today. It was his first run back after a break to get him ready for the autumn and the ground was very deep.
'He has a great attitude, an awful lot of speed and is a beautiful mover. Johnny said he was getting tired at the furlong marker but kept going.
'We will step him up to seven furlongs now and have a look at Arc day (*Prix Jean Luc Lagardere-Grand Criterium).” - Aidan O’Brien.
“He has everything a good horse needs - he's very brave, has great ability and a big heart. He's won two Group Ones and to do it on that ground is impressive.” - Johnny Murtagh.
Mastercraftsman is an early favourite at 5/1 for the 2000 Guineas of 2009.
And Aidan O’Brien has firmed to 1/5 with William Hill to draw level with American Bobby Frankel’s record win of Group One races.
* Aidan O’Brien has won the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere-Grand Criterium five times since 1999 with Ciro, Rock Of Gibraltar, Oratorio, Horatio Nelson and Holy Roman Emperor.
