Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Norwegian would (possibly could?)

One of the most interesting horses nominated for the 2008 Melbourne Cup is the Danish based (but well travelled) Alpacco.

Alpacco is a son of Desert King, who also sired the champion three-time Melbourne Cup winner, Makybe Diva.

Alpacco is the winner of two Listed Races. In Germany he won the RWE Rhein Ruhr AG Derby Trial, Mulheim. Most recently he won the Listed Valley Chappel Memorial (2200m) at Ovrevoll in Norway.

His trainer, Lars Kelp, is keen on venturing to Melbourne for an attempt at the Melbourne Cup. But this may be a case of underestimating the difficulty of our race - or overestimating the ability of his horse. Kelp also has as targets the Scandinavian Open at Copenhagen in August, and quotes:

"Later in the Fall we may aim at the Melbourne Cup. We paid 500,000 for Alpacco and he almost paid it back with this victory."

With only two Listed Race wins to his credit (in Germany and Norway) at five years of age he appears well short of the class required to win a Melbourne Cup. When trained in Dubai by South African trainer Herman Brown he was competitive on occasions, but often very disappointing. Blinkers were added to sharpen him up, and his win in Dubai came as a result of dropping back in distance to 1600m. Perhaps Lars Kelp has improved him. But it still appears a most unlikely possibility that he might win a Melbourne Cup.

(note that the performance of Alpacco on the pedigree page I have not updated. It is as it was when the horse was purchased in Dubai).
