Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Most metropolitan wins in the past 12 months

September 25th 2008 07:24
Studying the list of horses with the most metropolitan wins in the previous twelve months in Australia (up to the end of September) it throws up some interesting names and results.

Zarita: 6 wins including Group One

The equal leaders on ten wins are two horses light-years apart in acclaim (and far apart in distance).

Weekend Hussler is one. A champion horse that has adulation and praise in Australia - but has somehow (strangely so) slipped out of the top 10 ranked thoroughbreds in the world. Big error in classification there. A winner of over $3 million with multiple Group One victories. He is second also on earnings behind Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

He shares ten wins with a 5 year old gelding from Perth by the name of Vizard (very cheekily named by Magic Of Money - out of Tickle The Till. Steve Vizard would not be amused). I know little about him apart from his record which shows that he has now amassed nearly $300,000 and has won Listed Races at his past 2 starts after rising from restricted company at the beginning of his winning run. No horse can win 10 metropolitan races anywhere (in twelve months - most will never get close in a whole career) unless very talented.

Equal on seven wins are Moonee Valley champion sprinter Kaphero. Six of his seven wins were at Moonee Valley and his only other was the 1000m sprint at Sandown Hillside. He too has graduated to Group Company with a Group 3 win and brave 3rd at Group 1.

Simplest is another on 7 wins - these all won since March of 2008 when transferred from Graeme Rogerson to be trained in Queensland by B Baldwin. He has cut a swathe through minor races in Queensland after competing in strong 3 year old races in Melbourne.

Also on 7 wins is 6 year old Perth mare Danecay who has won a series of minor races and over $250,000.

The list of horses equal with 6 wins runs down to 14th position and includes such notable horses as:

El Presidente (winner of the Group One Railways Stakes at Ascot in Perth)

Zarita (Pat Hyland's most promising staying mare who already boasts a 2nd behind Weekend Hussler this campaign and is the winner of: Group 1 Schweppes Oaks at Morphettville; Group 2 Kewney Stakes at Flemington & Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield)

Causeway Queen (winner of 2 listed races in Tasmania in the Tasmanian Oaks & Strutt Stakes as well as her wins in Melbourne).

Classy Nugget (winner of Listed Farnley Stake in Perth after progressing from restricted company)

Li'l Cashy (who has won at Caulfield - although has been very well placed to win the bulk in South Australia)

Star Of Crown (trained by Clarry Conners in Sydney and well placed to win a series of restricted races and over $230,000)

El Maze is a most interesting inclusion into this group This evergreen 8 year old not only won the Group 3 Spring Stakes - but he also has the honour of having the most starts of any horse on metropolitan tracks in this 12 month period - with a staggering 21 starts. He obviously love stable life. He has actually raced 31 times (to this time) in a preparation that started on the 7th of April 2007.
