Payne and Lindop on winning working holidays in the UK
July 17th 2009 09:29
After spending a Winter working holiday in Europe in 2008, Michelle Payne returned again in 2009 and met with almost immediate success.
In 2008 Michelle originally believed she would only be riding trackwork - but riding work for Aidan O’Brien was an opportunity that could not be passed up. But to her surprise Aidan O’Brien did give her the opportunity to ride one of his multiple entries in a Group Three (Ladbrokes Give Thanks Stakes) race at Cork. She finished 7th - and was the first of the seven O’Brien runners to finish.
This year she had thought she would be at Ballydoyle again, but has teamed up with the Australian-born trainer, Jane Chapple-Hyam, and has already ridden a winner for her at Warwick aboard Iasia.
Chapple-Hyam was disappointed to have missed a start in last year’s Melbourne Cup when Yellowstone was scratched on the eve of the race. This year she is targeting the Cup with Judgethemoment.
Michelle was interviewed this week on radio station Sport 927 (Melbourne):
"All of the other riders in the race went down the outside of the track, but I had walked it earlier and I felt there was nothing wrong with the inside. I backed my judgement and he won by three lengths, so I'm very pleased with the way that worked out.” - Michelle Payne describing her win aboard Iasia.
"Jane has said I can ride Judgethemoment in the Goodwood Cup here at the end of July, which is exciting because it's a Group 2 race, and if all goes well I can ride him in the Melbourne Cup as well.” - Michelle Payne on Sport 927.
In 9 rides up to the 16th of July Michelle Payne has ridden 1 winner (Iasia) - but also taken a ride for Luca Cumani.
Also on a productive working holiday in the UK is Clare Lindop - confirmed (and the usual) rider for Melbourne Cup early favourite, Rebel Raider, the most impressive winner of both the VRC and SA Derby this season. Clare has ridden 3 winners from her 15 rides in the UK - riding predominately for former Australian trainer, Jeremy Gask.
We have had our Melbourne Cup winners from Europe and Asia. Could 2009 be the time for our first female Melbourne Cup winning jockey?
