Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Miss Andretti to Exceed And Excel

September 7th 2008 05:47
After Miss Andretti ran the worst race of her career - a disinterested last placing behind Bel Mer at Caulfield - the decision has been made to retire her to stud.

It has been announced that she will be sent to the exciting Darley stallion Exceed And Excel (by Danehill out of Patrona). He stands currently for $110,000.

Exceed And Excel was at three the champion Sprinter In Australia. He is the champion first-season sire in Australia and already has sired eighteen individual European winners, including the Group Two winner Infamous Angel, and winners from Royal Ascot, Flashmans Papers and Spin. At home in Australia he has sired the Group Three winners: Sugar Babe, Believe'n'Succeed, Exceedingly Good and Wilander, and also Listed Race winner Outdo.

Miss Andretti is by Ihitram, a daughter of Royal Academy. Miss Andretti is one of our greatest ever sprinting mares. She was named as the 2006-2007 Horse Of The Year in Australia. In 2007 she was victorious in six world class sprint races: the Lightning Stakes, Australia Stakes, Newmarket Handicap, Schweppes Stakes, Victoria Racing Club Stakes and, in an historic international victory, the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The end to her racing career came all too suddenly. Her last start a stark indication that she had lost her desire to race. Her speed and fighting spirit were here trademarks and she seldom failed or faltered in a glorious career. As with the difficulties and disappointments of champion mares such as Genuine Risk, who fail to pass on their same qualities or even reproduce at all, nothing in racing is certain. But this does look to be an exceptional first mating for her, and praise indeed for the early deeds of the stallion Exceed And Excel.

Race record of Exceed And Excel:
12 starts for 7 wins and 1 second placing.
