Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Moama

It is a remarkable effort to win when coming off an 83 week break.

And it must have been a frustrating wait for for the connections as they waited for their very talented Mossman mare to return to the track after she displayed so much promise as a 3 year old (her first racing season - she did not race at two).

After winning at her second start at the Sunshine Coast, less than one month later Moama would finish a very close 3rd behind subsequent Group One winner Captain Sonador (2010 Epsom Handicap), leading the field until the final stages of the 1200 metre event at Doomben, ultimately being beaten less than a length. Moama would have her next start - her final start for 18 months - when beaten into third in a three-way photo in the Listed Mode Stakes (1200 metres) at Doomben.

Now transferred from trainer Brian Gentle into the stable of champion trainer Peter Moody, the big mare returned to racing with an impressive victory at Mornington on the 12th of July. Ridden by stable jockey Luke Nolen, Moama settled just off the speed before building momentum and cruising away for a 2.5 length win over Pilot’s Lane in the 1000 metre event on a slow rated track when a $3.00 favourite.
