Montjeu

The recent stunning success of Montmartre in France has caused me to return to thoughts of his sire, Montjeu (by Sadler’s Wells).

Coolmore stallions Montjeu and Galileo have both shuttled between Europe and Australia, and due to their growing status in Europe, neither is expected to return to Australia.
The lack of stellar (equivalent to European) success by the Montjeu progeny in Australia and New Zealand is very surprising.
This year we saw Nom De Jeu rise from his 4th in the New Zealand Derby to take the Group One AJC Australian Derby .
In fact we only have four stakes-winners so far this year in Australia by Montjeu, with Nom De Jeu clearly the best; followed by Ballack (with success in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup at Eagle Farm); Gorky Park (very impressive winner of the Andrew Ramsden Stakes and now set for the Melbourne Cup) and Fulmonti.
In Europe his list of great achievements dwarfs anything achieved in the Southern Hemisphere:
Among this list are:
Hurricane Run (2005 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe: no.1 ranked thoroughbred in World Rankings)
Motivator (2005 Epsom Derby)
Authorized (2007 Epsom Derby)
Scorpion (Grand Prix de Paris)
Frozen Fire (2008 Irish Derby)
Montmartre (2008 Grand Prix de Paris)
and more.
With that impressive list it would be expected that in Australia Montjeue would have produced a string of classic winners. But the only race of prominence won (to this time) is the AJC Australian Derby. Growl and Gallant Guru have performed very well, but it could be expected that he would have a greater impact on our staying races and 3yo classics.
Montjeu was no.1 World Ranked Thoroughbred in 2000. His race record is exceptional:
At 2:
Won
Longchamp Prix Isonomy L (1800 m.),
Chantilly Prix de la Maniguette (1600 m.).
At 3:
Won
Curragh Irish Derby Gr 1 (1 1/2 m.),
Chantilly Prix du Jockey Club Gr 1 (2400 m.),
Longchamp Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Gr 1 (2400 m.),
Prix Greffulhe Gr 2 (2100 m.),
Prix Niel Gr 2 (2400 m.).
2nd
Longchamp Prix Lupin Gr 1.
4th
Tokyo Japan Cup Gr 1.
At 4:
Won
Ascot King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. Gr 1 (1 1/2 m.),
Curragh Tattersalls Gold Cup Gr 1 (10 1/2 f.),
Saint-Cloud Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud Gr 1 (2400 m.),
Longchamp Prix Foy Gr 2 (2400 m.).
