Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Play Just For Me

Play Just For Me

Last Wednesday at Moonee Valley, jockey Lisa Cropp displayed her acknowledged riding talent and strength in getting the wayward chestnut mare, Play Just For Me, home in the sixth race. But it wasn't easy. Lisa had to withstand a protest by Chris Symons on third placed Bye Bella. Chris was initially disappointed for a run as they rounded the home turn; then, all the way down the straight Play Just For Me  tried  to lay-in, narrowing the gap between her and second placegetter, Humma Mumma, and consequently squeezing Bye Bella out of the action. Chris Symons couldn't find a way between them until the last 30 metres or so when Bye Bella got going again and was making up ground on the two leaders. But it was too late and she hit the line hard more than a length behind the winner. The stewards felt that the margin was too great to reverse the result and dismissed Symon's protest. Here is a sequence of photos from the 100 metre mark to the 50 metre mark showing Lisa fighting to control Play Just For Me.

Stewards' report:

Race 6 – ESSENDON JEEP WRANGLER HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

C Symons rider of Bye Bella, third placegetter, lodged an objection against Play Just For Me (USA) alleging interference over the final 200m. It was established that at the top of the straight Bye Bella shifted out and made slight contact with Play Just For Me (USA) on two occasions. Shortly after this Play Just For Me (USA), when laying inwards, shifted in resulting in Bye Bella being hampered between that runner and Humma Mumma which shifted out slightly. Stewards did not feel that the interference suffered to Bye Bella equated to the beaten margin and as a result the protest was dismissed and correct weight was given.
