Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Double to Meech at Mornington

November 22nd 2010 05:02
First Two To Linda

words and photographs by Neil Murray

In a rather lack lustre program at Mornington last Saturday, three jockeys rode doubles - Jamie Mott, Dale Smith and Linda Meech. Linda asserted her authority very quickly with wins in the first two races. In the first, a maiden plate over 1000 metres, Linda rode the David Hayes trained filly, Kuroda Field. The filly had been close to the money in her three previous starts having run two seconds and a third. In this one she started favourite, and Linda Meech didn't let the punters down, getting the filly home nicely by half a length from Look Don't Touch, ridden by Linda Cropp. In the second, a maiden plate over 1200 metres for fillies and mares, Linda rode the Danielle Smith trained, Somethinfornothin. Linda steered the $7 shot to a one and a half length win from the Tony Noonan trained, Never Forget.

Linda had a crackerjack 2009/2010 season, winning the country jockey premiership with 104 winning rides. This season she currently sits in 14th place with 19 wins; but there's a long way to go.
