A Purple Quinella

Race seven at Mornington, 10 May, 2011 provided one of the hardest fought finishes of the day. I'm Leaving, ridden by Brian Park, and Cage Fighter ridden by Brian Higgins, made their runs together, ranging up to the leaders at the top of the straight, then drawing away from the rest just after the 100 metre mark. Both jockeys wore purple colours and both horses purple blinkers. Side by side the purple pair fought it out to the line. In the end, I'm Leaving prevailed by a short half-head.
A remarkable turnaround by this six year old bay gelding (Jetball - Telbon Belle). In two starts in January, he ran last by nine lengths in a picnic race at Woolamai, and last by fourteen lengths in a picnic race at Pakenham. After two further unplaced runs at Pakenham and Mornington, I'm Leaving hit form with a vengeance over 1780 metres in heavy going at Stony Creek on 24 April, scoring by ten lengths. The step up to 2044 metres in dead-going proved no problem for I'm Leaving in this latest win. Stacey Rawiller had been booked for the ride but because of injury she was unable to take it. Brian Park, who rode I'm Leaving for the win at Stony Creek, substituted for Stacey to score another success on this in-form horse.
This sequence of photos shows some of the action in the straight.
editor's note:
The winner, I'm Leaving, is trained by Maree Lewis who (according to Racing Victoria website) trains a small team of 9 horses. She has brought horses to the races just 13 times in 2011 (including picnic racing) and I'm Leaving has been successful on two occasions - her only 2 wins. And according to Racing Victoria records, these 2 wins are the only 2 successes for Maree Lewis from her training records, dating back to 2001. No doubt then that I'm Leaving is the stable favourite.
