Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Mourilyan (most likely) Melbourne bound

Trainer Gary Moore has only had Mourilyan for a little more than one month, but describes the much travelled four year old as “a seriously good horse.”

Good enough in fact to be firmly aimed at the Melbourne Cup. And the plans firm enough to have curtailed a trip to any country with this horse that would interfere with quarantine protocols of Australia.

Mourilyan will be running for Gary Moore at Sandown this coming Saturday in the Heritage Handicap over 1 mile and 2 furlongs. He is top-weight on 9 stone 13 pounds.

Formerly trained in Ireland by John Oxx and then owned by the Aga Khan, Mourilyan was bought by Ramzan Kadroyov (the President of Chechnya) after twice winning at the Dubai carnival earlier this year. The colt then had one run for South African trainer Herman Brown, in the Singapore Cup in May, before joining the Moore stable.

“I have had horses from Herman Brown before, so that's why they chose me. The aim is to go for the Melbourne Cup and from what I have seen he is a seriously good horse." - Gary Moore.

Gary Moore is unsure if Mourilyan’s owner will be at Sandown - wondering also if he need communicate in Russian or through an interpreter. Although this is a new partnership, the communication and planning to date has been effective. It was a consideration that Mourilyan go to Turkey for the Bosphorus Cup, but that move would have ruled out a trip to Australia on quarantine grounds.

Mourilyan had also been the early top-weight at 9 stone 13 pounds for the Ebor Handicap.

• 4-y-o bay colt
• Desert Prince (IRE) - Mouramara (IRE) (Kahyasi (UK))
• Current Trainer: G L Moore
• Current Owner: Mr Ramzan Kadyrov

Mourilyan has won 4 races from 8 starts from 9 furlongs to 12 furlongs. It is a feature of his racing style to be near the front and on the speed.

Mourilyan is currently at 70/1 with Sportingbet for the Melbourne Cup.
