This very talented filly trained by leading Victorian trainer Peter Moody won her second race last Saturday when successful at Caulfield over 1600 metres. This win followed up on her Maiden win at Echuca (1600 metres) at her previous start when blinkers was added to her gear for the first time.
This win marked a first-time Saturday metropolitan race double for jockey Linda Meech - and gave Peter Moody his 50th winner in Melbourne this season (currently sitting on 51 wins after a treble - a huge margin of 20 wins ahead of Danny O’Brien).
Although only a narrow (nose) victory, this filly was nonetheless impressive. A half-sister to multiple Group Winner Marble Halls (1997 VRC Turnbull Stakes - 1998 VATC Toorak Handicap) Ocean Dream gives every impression that the further she goes the better she will get.
She was the top speed selection for Speedratings and won at the good odds of $7.30.
Before this campaign her last run before spelling saw her 4th in the Listed Arrow Training Services Stakes (1600 metres) at Moonee Valley. From very early on Trainer Peter Moody has held a good opinion of this filly - and at her second race start she ran favourite when unplaced (6th) behind subsequent multiple Group and Listed Race winner Kidnapped (2009 Group 2 Sandown Guineas).
Ocean Dream settled back and appreciated the solid speed set in this 1600m race. She circled the field wide on turning and looked set to race away - but undoubtedly she is now looking for longer trips and she was strong, but dour, as she gained the upper hand and held a slender margin in the run to the line. This weekend she is entered for the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800 metres) at Morphettville and a 2000 metre handicap at Caulfield.
The long list of talented fillies/mares trained by Peter Moody is quite remarkable. Not only the champion Typhoon Tracy - but also Set For Fame; Headway; Avenue; Speedy Natalie, and the injured star Black Caviar. Last weekend Chateau D'Yquem and Ocean Dream began tentative steps to one day deserve inclusion on that list.
