Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. My passion for the theatre of the racetrack saw me leave school at fifteen and spend early mornings immersed in the sweat, smells, and sting of preparing horses for racing. Later I would come to research bloodlines and work in the multi-million dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. Horse racing has many facets. It does not sit in isolation in the world. It is something we should explore in detail and in depth. For more than ten years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Peeping Fawn

August 5th 2008 06:35
Aidan O'Brien has announced the retirement of his champion mare Peeping Fawn. She had not started since winning the Yorkshire Oaks nearly 12 months earlier and had not been 100% right (or impressive) in track gallops preceding a campaign this season. She will be sent to stud next year.

A bay filly by Danehill out of Maryinsky (by Sadler's Wells) this champion filly completed an incredible three year old campaign in 2007 with four Group One victories in succession: Irish Pretty Polly Stakes; Irish Oaks; Nassau Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks.

Her record was quite amazing considering that it took her four starts to finally win her maiden, a one mile Fillies Maiden at Naas. In 2007 she also finished second to Finsceal Beo in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and second to Light Shift in the Epsom Oaks.

It was a freak accident to Keiren Fallon when riding in France that saw Johnny Murtagh win as the replacement jockey aboard Peeping Fawn in the 2007 Irish Oaks. Johnny Murtagh would then stay in the saddle to complete a treble of Group One wins. This was to be a portent of season 2008 and the O'Brien and Murtagh Group One (winning) partnership.

A slice from a quote from Aidan O'Brien from 2007 (now very relevant):

"She has one of the best pedigrees in the world..."

Maryinsky, dam of Peeping Fawn, is a half-sister to Group Two winner Better Than Honour who is the dam of Belmont Stakes-winners Rags To Riches and Jazil. This is a very strong family.

Peeping Fawn was awarded the status of European Champion three-year-old Filly in 2007.

In total she had ten starts for five wins, two seconds and three thirds, and collected $1,392,109 in prizemoney. She won from 1 mile to 1 1/2 miles.
