A wink and a winning nod: Little Artist supreme
December 5th 2010 05:42
After an impressive debut victory at Ballarat in June, Peter Moody struggled to get his talented filly Little Artist to repeat the winning performance. Subsequently she failed (at her next start) when favourite at Flemington in July - finishing 12 lengths behind the winner Royal Bender. The puzzle began for connections.
From the Flemington stewards’ report:
Poor performance. Rider could offer no explanation. Vet exam found no abnormalities. Trainer advised filly will be spelled.
She was subsequently spelled and began her 2nd preparation 4 months later in November - this time at Moonee Valley in a strong race which was won by Anabaa’s Legacy, with Annlea a closing 2nd. Little Artist disappointed (again) to finish a well beaten 7th - 4 lengths from the winner. Regular Peter Moody jockey Luke Nolen was (again) puzzled by the performance.
From the Moonee Valley stewards’ report:
L Nolen (Little Artist) stated that the filly never travelled at any stage. A post race veterinary examination of Little Artist revealed no abnormalities.
Lining up on Saturday in the Braywin Loch M Fraser Handicap ($70,000) over 1440 metres at Caulfield, trainer Peter Moody elected to put winkers on the filly for the first time.
Once again she was well in the market at second favourite behind the well bred Lucky Angel from Tony Vasil’s yard. And she was to meet again Annlea, a filly who comfortably beat her home last start at Moonee Valley.
But this time the daughter of More Than Ready did travel in running for jockey Luke Nolen. She gathered early speed from her outside barrier and settled comfortably at the girth of surprise pacemaker Parisian Sunrise. She soon put paid to that filly on straightening and cleared away with a winning margin. Annlea responded (very) late and stormed home to be a half-length 2nd. Favourite Lucky Angel (a $220,000 purchase from Inglis Easter Yearling Sale) came with her - while the David Hayes trained Parisian Sunrise held on for 4th.
