After dominating the Melbourne trainers' premiership in season 2009-2010, Caulfield based trainer Peter Moody gave opposition stables every cause to think they may be vying for second or subsequent placing on the training premiership table again, as Moody’s stable lesser-lights set him out to an early lead in the trainers' premiership with two winners.
Last season Peter Moody nearly doubled the wins of his nearest rival Robert Smerdon (on 44 winners), winning the Metropolitan Trainers' Premiership with a total of 82 winners. In third place was Mick Price on 42 winners, while David Hayes and Mark Kavanagh both finished the season equal with 40 winners. Of equal interest is the fact that with prizemoney of $7,181,350 Peter Moody accumulated more racing riches than the combined totals of 2nd placed Robert Smerdon ($2,676,527) and 3rd placed Mick Price ($3,579,609). It was equal 4th placed Mark Kavanagh that went closest in prizemoney earnings with $6,947,042 - with a significant portion of that derived from Shocking and his win in the Melbourne Cup.
Peter Moody had a total of 180 winners across metropolitan and country Victoria last season. In second placing was provincial based trainer Darren Weir with 142 winners.
Among the highlights for the Moody stable last season were the the four Group 1 victories by Typhoon Tracy, as well as a Newmarket (G1) victory for the newly retired Wanted. In total Peter Moody trained 6 Group 1 winners (second only to the master trainer Bart Cummings) and was Australia’s leading black-type trainer with 28 winners, heading the Sydney powerhouse stables of Gai Waterhouse (26 wins), Peter Snowden (25 wins), and Chris Waller (22 wins).
The Peter Moody trained winners at Lakeside were the lightly raced 5 year old mare Mid Summer Music (ridden by Linda Meech) and the promising 3 year old Redoute's Choice colt, Achievements, who is on a Caulfield Guineas path.
Peter Moody achieves consistent success with his stable lesser-lights, but also comes equipped with an arsenal of racing elite ready to take part in the Spring. The before mentioned (obvious choice for Horse Of The Year) Typhoon Tracy - but in addition Black Caviar; Curtana; Doubtful Jack; Headway; Master Harry; Reward For Effort; and Willow Creek - with apologies to others I may have missed, or who may blossom in the coming months.
