Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Third Time's the Charm for Plum Pretty

In today’s running of the Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) at Churchill Downs, Plum Pretty was meeting up with an old rival, Zazu. It was their third time racing against each other. In their first meeting on 1/9/11 in the Santa Ynez Stakes (Grade 2) at Santa Anita, they both lost to California Nectar who would be injured before continuing on the trail to the Kentucky Oaks. That first time Zazu finished 2nd beaten a neck with Plum Pretty another 3 lengths behind in 3rd. The next time the two faced each other was in the Las Virgenes (Grade 1) at Santa Anita on 2/5/11. This time Zazu would prevail with a win and Plum Pretty was third again, beaten 5 ½ lengths. The purse that day was $250,000. For the first time this year the Kentucky Oaks had a purse of $1,000,000 and Plum Pretty was ready to prove she didn’t win the Sunland Park Oaks by 25 lengths simply because it was an inferior field. In today’s race Plum Pretty was out the gate in good fashion, in hot pursuit of the early pace setter Summer Soiree. As the early leader began to fade in the far turn Plum Pretty took off and never looked back. Oh maybe she looked just after the wire to see where Zazu was. You guessed it she finished third just like Plum Pretty had against her the other two times they met. Plum Pretty is by Medaglia d’ Oro out of the A.P. Indy mare Liszy, she is trained by Bob Baffert and had her regular rider Martin Garcia up for the win.
