Racing in West Australia has been undergoing a renaissance of interest and promotion - and the increase in prizemoney has attracted the best performed field ever assembled for the Railway Stakes.
That is not to say that the winner of this year’s event will be the best horse to ever win a Railway Stakes - given that Northerly was successful before launching his assault on the Eastern States. But quite often the depth of the field falls away after two or three raiders and one or two locals of quality - or high promise.
To highlight the depth of this field I will go through each runner and include their best performance.
Also it is worth noting the depth of the riding talent with top jockeys Michael Rodd; Brad Rawiller; Glenn Boss; Blake Shinn; Craig Newitt and Luke Nolen all engaged to ride.
1 Marasco (Fred Kersley) William Pike barrier 14
(best win: 1600m Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes 2007 defeating Apache Cat)
2 Niconero (David Hayes) Brad Rawiller barrier 8
(best win: 1400m Group 1 Futurity Stakes 2008 defeating Cargo Cult & Miss Finland)
3 Sniper’s Bullet (Tracey Bartley) Michael Rodd barrier 5
(best win: 1400m Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap defeating Gold Edition)
4 Bank Robber (Gai Waterhouse) Blake Shin barrier 2
(best win: 1400m Group 3 Tramway Quality 2008 - best performance is a 2nd 1600m Group 1 Epsom Handicap behind Theseo. In 4th place was subsequent Group 1 winner All Silent)
5 The Fuzz (David Hayes) Brad Parnham barrier 7
(best win: 1600m Group 2 Blamey Stakes 2008 defeating Barlinnie)
6 Action Pack (Justine Erkelens) Shaun O’Donnel barrier 15
(best win: 1800m Group 3 Strickland Stakes 2008)
7 Annenkov (Peter Moody) Luke Nolen barrier 1
(best win: 1800m Listed Emirates Airline Plate 2008 defeating the Fuzz - this his last start)
8 Beat The Storm (Ross Price) Lucas Camilleri barrier 10
(best win 1400m Group 3 Belmont Sprint 2007)
9 Famous Roman (Ken Williamson) Jason Whiting barrier 11
(best win 1500m Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes 2008 defeating Gilded Venom - their last start)
10 Gilded Venom (Steve Wallace) Patrick Carberry barrier 9
(best win 1400m Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes - no luck last time when 2nd)
11 Hartleys Dream (Peter Giadresco) Troy Turner barrier 17
(best win 1400m Listed Farnley Stakes 2005 - 2nd in the Group 1 2007 Railway Stakes behind El Presidente)
12 Majestical (Matthew Enright) Wayne Hokai barrier 6
(best win 2025m Listed Cranbourne Cup 2008 defeating Barbaricus -Barbaricus would at his next start finish 3rd in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup after having no luck)
13 Pillar Of Hercules (Peter Moody) Glen Boss barrier 12
(best win 2000m Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes 2007 - 3rd 1600m Group 1 Toorak Handicap 2008)
14 Rightfully Yours (Mick Price) Craig Newitt barrier 4
(And here is our anomaly. This horse has been favourite - or close to favourite through betting - and he is yet to be placed, let alone win at even Listed Race level. But he has untapped potential)
15 Tarzi (Neville Parnham) Steven Parnham barrier 3
(best win: 1400m Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes 2007)
16 Grand Nirvana (Fred Kersley) Peter Knuckey barrier 13
(best win: 1400m Listed Fairetha Stakes 2008)
17 I Command (Jeremy Easthope) barrier 16 (jockey not notified)
(best performance: 2nd 1500m Listed City Of Belmont Easter Stakes 2008)
The Railway Stakes has 11 horses that have won a Group Race - 4 horses that have won a Listed Race - and only 2 horses yet to win at black type level.
The worst performed horse in the field (on Group Race values) is the $4.80 second favourite Rightfully Yours. It would be a feat of some significance if he could jump from no black type wins to go straight to winning a prestigious Group One event.
Such puzzles are the reason why we love racing.
