Go West!

Following the interest and success of the ‘owners choice’ barrier draw system used for the 2008 WS Cox Plate in Melbourne, Perth Racing has decided to adopt the same concept for the running of their $1 million Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m at Ascot) on Saturday the 22nd of November.

And given the peculiarities of the Ascot racetrack the barrier draw is always of vital importance.
The reformatting of the Perth Carnival allows for horses who had light Spring preparations in Melbourne to peak at the (now) very lucrative Perth Summer Carnival. And for a select few there is also the opportunity of continuing on to Hong Kong for the International meeting at Sha Tin. Each feature race a further step in the process.
This year the Perth Carnival sees the best contingent of Eastern State horses to (en masse) contest the Summer Carnival. This group is highlighted by the headline gallopers Apache Cat and Takeover Target - who will meet each other in the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot on November 29th. Trainer Greg Eurell is using this race (and the result) as reason (or not) to then proceed on to Hong Kong. Apache Cat was disappointing when expected to win the Patinack Farms Classic first up - and would need to defeat the international traveller and benchmark of Takeover Target to be worthy of the trip to Hong Kong.
The list of fellow Eastern State horses is also very impressive and includes the Mick Price trained and very promising Rightfully Yours; Peter Moody trained quality performers Pillar Of Hercules and Annenkov; and the David Hayes’ quartet of Hips Don’t Lie, El Daana, Niconero and The Fuzz.
Also in Perth are Sniper’s Bullet; Bank Robber and (the in form) Majestical. The field in the Railway Stakes looms as one of the best fields in the history of the race. Although there have been several quality Eastern States horses to travel west and win the Railway Stakes - among their number being Better Loosen Up and Marwong - this field will boast a broader wealth of performance and talent than ever seen previously. The best horse to win the Railway (in my opinion) would be Northerly in 2000.
The Railway will have 16 starters with 4 emergencies.
