Raven's Pass (finally passed Henry)
September 29th 2008 00:15
It did appear that Aidan O’Brien’s champion 3 year old Henrythenavigator would secure him another Group One prize when he ran 11/8 favourite in the Group One Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes at Ascot.

But after chasing home the Ballydoyle champion on three occasions this season, the flashy chestnut from John Gosden’s stable prevailed after a masterful ride from Jimmy Fortune (fortune favours the brave).
Previously Raven’s Pass has been ridden conservatively and given away starts to class horses Henrythenavigator and Tamayuz in races of mixed or moderate tempo. This time it was Raven’s Pass who was to lay first claim with two furlongs to go forging to the lead and challenging Murtagh and Henrythenavigator to do the chasing.
“The jockey and trainer have finally got it right! It is not bad being in front of that good horse for a change, and he had to come and get us.
It was nice to track Tamayuz and it was great to finish ahead of Henrythenavigator.”
"Since his win last year as a two-year-old he has been outstanding. He was beaten by the draw in the Guineas and then ran a blinder in the St James's Palace Stakes. We then let Tamayuz have 12 lengths in the Jean Prat and we let Henry get the run on us in a slow-run Sussex.”
"We knew this time we were going to be a little handier - that was the only plan. The plan now is to go to the Breeders' Cup and he could run in the Mile or the Classic. He sees his races out well now and physically he has done very well. If the Mile was run somewhere like Belmont with one turn it would be fine, but it is a two-turn mile at Santa Anita and you can get done by the draw so on that basis we will entertain running in the Classic." - John Gosden, trainer.
"Earlier on in the year he was a bit hot and we needed to get him relaxed. I probably got it wrong in the Sussex, I should have kicked a little earlier but we always thought he would pull up when he got there.
"I was trying to sit and sit, but I sensed Johnny (Murtagh on Henrythenavigator) on my quarters and I knew it was time to kick then. He really stuck his neck out." - Jimmy Fortune.
Aidan O’Brien was far from displeased by his gallant colt’s second placing. Once again - coming after his failure in France on soft ground - the ground was not as firm as Henry would prefer, but he was pleased with his endeavour to the line. They will push on to the US and perhaps a clash again with Raven’s Pass in the Breeders’ Cup Classic along with US champions Curlin and Big Brown.
But Freddie Head, trainer of (newly elevated into top 10 racehorse rankings) French star miler Tamayuz was very downcast.
"I am very disappointed. He ran badly and I don't know why - it was not the ground. He was beaten very early on and got tense before the race so I wonder if he spent his energy in the preliminaries. It is now too early to talk about the Breeders' Cup. We will have to see how he comes out of this race." - Freddie Head.
