Horse racing is much more than an excuse for gambling. It is a love for the beauty, grace and speed of the horse. It can also be an intellectual battle of examining competing facts and trying to formulate the future from results of the past. In some ways it is an investigation, as performed by an eager detective. And in other ways it can be the thrill of a crossword puzzle, with multiple possible responses, but ultimately only one correct answer. It is a thing of beauty as much as it is a matter of commerce. I have been involved with horse racing in both practical and intellectual ways. From time spent as an apprentice jockey, to later the research of bloodlines in the multimillion dollar world of thoroughbred breeding and sales. And for the past twelve years I have provided speedrating information to the racing industry and public through my company: Speedratings (www.speedratings.com.au).

Hore-Lacy and Newitt Combine for Success at Cranbourne

November 8th 2010 04:57
Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy had success at Cranbourne on Sunday with his 3 year old Choisir filly, Princess Toshi.

Princess Toshi now has 2 wins from her 4 race starts. Although missing her 2 year old racing season, Princess Toshi was successful on debut as a 3 year old at Ballarat in late September. Obviously this daughter of Aiko (by Royal Academy) had shown Rick something at home, as in 2010 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale he purchased her half-brother by new sire Artie Schiller for $70,000.

Neil Murray was at Cranbourne yesterday and caught her (very narrow) second win.

No bigger smiles at Cranbourne racetrack last Sunday than on the faces of trainer Rick Hore - Lacy and jockey Craig Newitt after the Hore-Lacy trained, Princess Toshi won the Chandler McLeod Class1 Handicap over 1400 metres. Princess Toshi was not that popular with punters, at a starting price of $14, but Craig positioned her beautifully to move up and challenge the leader, Star Bint at the top of the straight. The two duelled it out all the way to the post, only to be pounced on by the fast finishing Law and Order, ridden by Chris Symons. Princess Toshi fought off the challenge gamely and in a bob of heads came up the narrowest of winners from Law and Order, second, and Star Bint third. It was all smiles as Craig Newitt brought Princess Toshi back to scale.
