Royal Delta takes the Alabama
The Grade I Alabama Stakes was run this past Saturday at Saratoga. The race was inaugurated in 1872 and named to honor William Cottrell of Mobile, Alabama. William was a modest man and did not want the race to bear his name, but agreed to use the name of his home state instead. This year’s running of the mile and a quarter dirt race for 3 yr. old fillies was run on a fast track and won by the dark bay filly Royal Delta by Empire Maker out of the A. P. Indy mare Delta Princess. Royal Delta relaxed early on and settled in third position following the early leaders Plum Pretty and It’s Tricky, who started their battle half way around the turn heading for home. The three fillies all met in their last race together which was won by It’s Tricky. At the quarter pole Royal Delta’s jockey Jose Lezcano asked her for more and that was all she needed. She seemed to fly past the two leaders but appeared to duck in sharply after clearing them apparently shying from the whip being used by her jockey.

The surprise of the race was the last place finish of Inglorious. She was sent off as the favorite following her win over the colts in the Queen’s Plate at a mile and a quarter. But that was on the synthetic track at Woodbine, which apparently she prefers over a dirt track. Inglorious ran last the entire race failing to show that closing kick that won the Queen’s Plate for her just a couple months ago.

Royal Delta was the second win in the Alabama for her trainer Bill Mott he previously won the race in 2005 with Sweet Symphony. Royal Delta is a homebred racing for the estate of Prince Saud bin Khaled who passed away earlier this year. She is scheduled to be part of a dispersal sale at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. She has now proven herself by winning on both the synthetic and dirt and has also worked well over the turf.
